Give your dog a stress free Christmas
Most of us now are feeling the imminent pressure of the big day looming, have
you got all the presents? Have you got enough time to finish the wrapping? Who’s going to pick up the turkey? And need to have one final clean around before sisters, brother, aunties, nephews etc descend upon us……
Remember our four-legged friends pick up on our emotions and will be aware that all is not as it usually is, this may unsettle them and cause them to react differently to their usual well behaved selves. Try to act normal and if you’re feeling stressed then try not to dump your emotions on your dog.
Think about creating a quiet space for them to escape to, maybe in another room where you can also put them as the kids start tearing off wrapping paper and running madly around when Grandma arrives at the front door!!!
Remember to ask all your guests on arrival to ignore your dog as they come in and when the dog is calm and ask them to call your dog over calmly and say Hi on their terms, if you feel this may not happen, put you dog in another room until your arrivals settle down and then bring your dog in, again they must ignore the dog until its calm.
I would have a strict rule PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE DOG, as there is lots of poisonous food around at Christmas. Nuts and nibbles left out on low tables, Chocolate and raisins can be a killer for a dog. I would discourage feeding under the table from any one, but if there are leftovers that are suitable then they should go into the dog’s food bowl and feed as normal, remember too much rich food will have an adverse effect on their tummies.
Also there are plants, berries and presents that may seem tempting to eat but will also be poisonous to a dog, so make sure these things are out of reach.
Have a very Merry Christmas and remember what an impact our mad world can have on our animals, so we must make sure they are looked after too.
